Galata Tower or Galata Kulesi is one of the oldest medieval towers still in existence. The tower is known for its breathtaking views and fascinating history. Twice, the tower was damaged by fire, in 1794 and 1831, after which, several restorations were done. In 1875, the roof of the tower which was reinforced by Sultan Selim III with lead and wood in 1794 was destroyed by a storm. Galata Tower remained without a roof until 1967 when the roof was reconstructed. The latest restorations happened as late as 2020.
