The Origin

The governor of Yemen introduced coffee to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent who popularized it throughout his empire. During the reign of Sultan Murat lV, drinking coffee was prohibited and punishable by execution because it was seen as a drug. But the immense popularity of the drink meant that the Sultan had to lift the ban and legalize the consumption of coffee.

The coffee culture spread in Europe from the Ottomans, and even though Europe changed the way it was prepared and drunk, Türkiye managed to preserve the original method of preparing and brewing Turkish coffee.
